A microcredentials is a short, competency-based, non-credit recognition [for which] mastery of competencies may be demonstrated through non-credit workshops or co-curricular experiences designed for this purpose. Earning a microcredential also results in a digital badge that may be shared by the student on resumes and various online profiles. The digital badge will identify the University as the issuer of the credential and will display the competencies represented by the microcredential.
The process of rolling out a formal policy and procedure for microcredentials is proceeding in two phases—(1) establishing the necessary structures for non-credit microcredentials, and (2) developing the procedures for converting some such microcredentials to academic credit, creating a new pathway to enrollment in certificate programs and stacking credentials even to degree programs. The second phase is now being addressed by the Faculty, with a policy and procedure expected in the coming months. The first phase is complete.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to propose new microcredentials that can be marketed to current students as a complement to their programs, to fellow University staff as professional development, and to the general public and employers.
A new webpage on myCharger presents a general overview as well as the necessary online forms for preparing proposals for new “micros”—a proposal form for faculty, a form for staff use, and a budget form.
The proposal form requires statements on the micro’s rationale and purpose, market viability, employer support, design, competencies, and development needs. The budget form requires information on fee structure, projected revenues, projected expenses (personnel and operational costs), projected launch date, and margins. Proposals are reviewed and approved by the proposer’s dean or VP, the VP for Enrollment Management, and the Provost. The policy may be updated as we gain more experience with this exciting new opportunity.
