Department of Hospitality & Tourism Management

The hospitality industry provides necessary goods and services to travelers and can be roughly split into five sectors: 1) Lodgings (hotels, motels, etc.); 2) Transportations (planes, trains, etc.); 3) Food and Beverage Operations (restaurants, bars, etc.); 4) Retail Stores (souvenir shops, arts/crafts stores, etc.); and 5) Tourism Activities (recreation, festivals, expositions, and events, etc.).

The hospitality, travel and tourism industries in the U.S alone requires more than a million top-level managers to operate daily. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE)(2014), the hospitality industry is a top ten business degree to earn and is the top six preferred industry (6.4%) that graduating seniors would like  to begin their career. The NACE contends that hospitality management salaries for college graduates are growing more quickly than in any other industry in the United States. While the BLS employment projections 2014-2024 anticipates that jobs in Leisure and Hospitality will have the 5th highest anticipated growth (9.8%) by 2024.
