Funding Opportunities

This page serves as a resource for undergraduate and graduate students as they seek to identify potential funding opportunities. Students are encouraged to contact our office for individual or group consultations to identify many more opportunities.

Our goal is to guide students through the process of identifying and applying for appropriate fellowships and scholarships in the United States and abroad. It is never too early to start planning. First-year and second-year students can begin the process by developing areas of interest and for international opportunities begin course work in foreign languages. Meet with your academic advisors, faculty, and other mentors to discuss your academic interests, as well as opportunities for undergraduate research and community service. These are the important first steps in building the academic credentials and personal character fellowships and scholarships look for.

NSF Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Funding Opportunity 2023

The National Science Foundation released a new solicitation for the MRI equipment requests for 2023 and beyond.  Deadlines have been modified and priority areas reflect the CHIPS and Science Act goals.

Synopsis:

MRI provides support to: 1) acquire critical research instrumentation without which advances in fundamental science and engineering research may not otherwise occur; 2) obtain next-generation research instruments by developing instruments with new capabilities that open new opportunities to advance the frontiers in science and engineering research; 3) enhance research training of students who will become the next generation of instrument users, designers and builders; 4) catalyze new knowledge and discoveries by empowering the nation’s scientists and engineers with state-of-the-art research instruments that are, in general, too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NSF programs.

Key Points:

  • Support is for one piece of equipment, not furnishing a lab set up
  • Equipment will support multiple research projects or researchers and will be fully utilized on a regular basis
  • University must agree to maintain equipment after grant term – speak to your chair and/or dean about support for your equipment request

Note that in 2023 there will be two deadlines, so those not ready for February can consider a fall submission.  Beginning in 2024, the deadlines will be October/November rather than traditional January/February dates.

NSF Due Dates Submission Window Dates (due by 5 p.m. submitter’s local time):

January 16, 2023 – February 21, 2023

October 16, 2023 – November 15, 2023

October 15, 2024 – November 15, 2024; October 15, 2025 – November 14, 2025; October 15, 2026 – November 16, 2026

Key Dates:

Wednesday, December 7 and Thursday, December 8 NSF Virtual Town Halls

NSF will host outreach townhalls with information about the latest MRI funding opportunity. The session will begin at 1:00 p.m. EST and have two parts: 1) Session 1: a general MRI information session (1:00 p.m. -1:45 p.m. EST), followed by 2) Session 2: a Question and Answer Session.

Please register for the Town Hall (required) here

  • Please enter your name, organization, and email address.
  • Click on the “Register” tab at the bottom of the page.

We encourage all potential applicants for 2023 to register for one of the sessions.

Additional background materials are available from NSF’s November 2022 Webinar for the Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI) https://nsfpolicyoutreach.com/resources/fall-2022-gc-major-research-instrumentation-mri-program/

Follow up consultations can be scheduled with Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs staff.

Prior to Winter Break: Decisions of proposals that will move forward (if more than the allowable maximum are proposed) will be made prior to winter break so teams can work on the proposal over break.

Monday, February 13, 2023 – latest date to submit Internal Routing Form and proposal documents to the Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs (OGSP) for submission to NSF.

The solicitation is available at: https://beta.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/major-research-instrumentation-program-mri

“Track 1” has been revised to include proposals that request funds from NSF greater than $100,0001 and less than $1,400,000. “Track 2” has been revised to include proposals that request funds from NSF greater than or equal to $1,400,000 up to and including $4,000,000.

A new track has been added (“Track 3”) to incorporate opportunities, consistent with section 10373 of the “CHIPS and Science Act of 2022” (42 U.S.C. 19083),for proposal requests that include the acquisition, development, installation, operation, and maintenance of equipment and instrumentation to reduce consumption of helium.

Each performing organization is limited to a maximum of three proposals in Tracks 1 and 2, with no more than two (2) submissions in Track 1 and no more than one (1) submission in Track 2. One (1) additional submission is permitted in the newly defined Track 3. As a result, it is now possible for an institution to submit up to four MRI proposals within these Track limits. Any MRI proposal may continue to request support for either the acquisition or development of a research instrument.

Consistent with section 10318(a)(6)(F) of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 (42 U.S.C. 18997(a)(6)(F)), MRI encourages proposals that facilitate U.S. leadership in microelectronics research and training.
