Reporting Bias Incidents

It is expected that all members of the University community will engage in anti-bias behavior and refrain from actions that intimidate, humiliate, or demean persons or groups or that undermine their security or self-esteem.

At the University of New Haven, there is an expectation that all community members are committed to creating and supporting a climate which promotes civility, mutual respect, and open-mindedness. There also exists an understanding that with the freedom of expression comes the responsibility to support community members’ right to live and work in an environment free from harassment and fear. It is expected that all members of the University community will engage in anti-bias behavior and refrain from actions that intimidate, humiliate, or demean persons or groups or that undermine their security or self-esteem.

What is a bias-motivated incident?

It is any behavior which involves an expression of hostility against the person or property of others because of traits related to their race, ethnicity, country of origin, religion, gender, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, age, or physical or mental ability, including learning and/or developmental disabilities and past/present history of mental disorder or other category protected by state or federal law.

If you have witnessed or are the target of a bias-motivated incident, please complete the reporting form. If you feel the student or community member needs medical attention of poses an immediate threat to themselves or other, contact:

  • 911 (for an emergency)

Age– The duration of a person’s life.

Disability– A physical, cognitive/mental, sensory, emotional or developmental impairment which substantially limits those afflicted in one or more major life activities.

Ethnicity– A social group that has a common national or cultural tradition, based on factors like ancestry, language or beliefs.

Gender– The socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities and attributes that a society considers appropriate for men and women (i.e. masculine, feminine).

Gender Expression– The external manifestation (e.g. mannerisms, personality traits, clothing) of a person’s gender identity.

Gender Identity– A person’s sense of being male, female, neither or both; this is a personal definition and not based on how others see or define the person. This includes, but is not limited to man, woman, transgender, gender non-conforming, gender fluid.

Gender Perception– A term used to describe how an individual is classified as either male, female or transgender, which is typically based on physical features (e.g. facial hair, body structure, genitalia). 

Genetic Information– Information which includes genetic tests for an individual or their family member(s), as well as information about any diseases, disorders or conditions of an individual or their family member(s) as family medical history. 

Immigration Status– A term referring to a non-U.S. citizen’s status when entering the country.

Nationality– The status of belonging to a particular nation by origin, birth or naturalization.

Physical Appearance– The outward look of any person and defining traits about the features of the body.

Pregnancy– The period of time between conception and birth when a woman is carrying a fetus.

Race– A group of people united or classified together on the basis of common history, nationality, or geographic distribution.

Religion/Spiritual Affiliation– The personally selected association with a particular religion or belief system which establishes a set of spiritual and/or moral values.

Sex– The biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women (i.e. male, female).

Sexual Orientation– A person’s emotional, physical and sexual attraction to another person; this includes, but is not limited to, asexual, bisexual, heterosexual, and homosexual.

Sexual Orientation Perception– A person’s presumed knowledge of another person’s sexual orientation based on physical attributes or behaviors (e.g. tone of voice, clothing, behavior with others).

Socioeconomic Status (Class)– An individual’s position within a hierarchical social structure, based on variables that include:  occupation, education, income, wealth and place of residence.

Veteran Status– Any member or former member of the US Armed Services that is engaged in active duty Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard or someone released under conditions other than dishonorable discharge.
