Leadership Positions
The mission of The Office of Residential Life is to create a safe, supportive, inclusive and engaged learning environrment that enhances students’ holistic development. We provide opportunities for students to create community and implement a vision for their future. In order to achieve this part of the mission, the Office of Residential Life employs over 75 student staff year-round in various positions that range in time commitment and leadership experience.

Office Assistants
The Office of Residential Life employs office assistants to work on small, creative projects, answer the phone, greet students, provide information and generally assist in the overall operation of the office. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, administrative support to the Office of Residential Life. Positions are paid a weekly wage as part of the work study program. You must be eligible for Federal Work Study in order to apply for the position.
Sign-In Assistants
Sign-In Assistants work within the residence halls as the first point of contact for all residents, guests and visitors during evening hours. The main responsibilities for this position include: signing in all visitors/guests to the residence halls and ensuring that the Sign-in Log is maintained and accurately reported nightly. Positions are paid a weekly wage as part of the work study program. You must be eligible for Federal Work Study in order to apply for the position.
Atwood Assistants
The Office of Residential Life employs Atwood Assistants to work on small, creative projects, answer the phone, greet students, provide information and generally assist in the overall operation of the Atwood Apartments. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, administrative support to the Atwood Apartments, generating social media ideas, and identifying new ways to create a welcome community at the Atwood Apartments. Positions are paid a weekly wage as part of the work study program. You must be eligible for Federal Work Study in order to apply for the position.
Resident Assistants
The Office of Residential Life employs undergraduate students who serve as student leaders in the residence halls. Resident Assistants work with residents to create a healthy living and learning environment through educational programming, policy enforcement, and social interactions. Currently, there are 67 Resident Assistants employed by the Office of Residential Life. Seven of these positions are Senior Resident Assistants, who serve as staff mentors.
The Resident Assistant position requires great organizational and interpersonal skills, leadership, strong ethics, accountability and creativity. As a Resident Assistant, you are part of a talented staff dedicated to the residential students of the University community. Resident Assistant positions are hired between the months of December and March.
Academic Peer Mentors
Academic Peer Mentors serve as an academic support system for students as they face new challenges and concerns during their first year of college. Peer Mentors are trained to point first-year students to faculty and other academic support professionals on campus, as well as help in the development of important study skills such as time management, reading and note taking. Academic Peer Mentor positions are hired between the months of December and March.
The Graduate Residence Directors
The Graduate Residence Director is a graduate student who is enrolled in a graduate program at the University of New Haven and employed by the Office of Residential Life. Their role oversees a residential community of students and a staff comprised of Resident Assistants and Academic Peer Mentors (in first-year areas only). Residence Directors have significant responsibilities within the central office and their individual communities, consistently working to improve the overall residential experience. Residence Directors build community through high visibility, programming and student engagement, and ensure policies and procedures are upheld. This position requires dedication, time management, creativity, and leadership. Typically, the hiring period is between February and April.
