What can a success advisor help you with?

Your appointment with a coach is tailored to YOU: your interests, grades, goals, and talents. Whether you’re tackling current academic struggles or seeking ways to enhance your learning experiences at the University of New Haven, your success advisor will help you maximize your options. Success Advisors are here to help you make the most of your first-year experience. Working with your success coach, you will create a personalized plan that can include any of the following:

  • Managing your time
  • Getting involved
  • Setting personal & academic goals
  • Organizing your weekly/monthly/semester assignments
  • Planning your class schedule
  • Study habits
  • Eliminating barriers to success
  • Balancing your academic & social lives
  • Improving course performance

1. Meet Weekly:
  • Receive consistent time management assistance
  • Discover talents & build academic skills
  • Be monitored academically
  • Explore majors
  • Set weekly time-bound goals
  • Coordinate academic & social balance
  • Develop a hands-on plan for conquering tough courses
  • Work with your coach to identify resources to aid you on your journey
  • Attend workshops to aid in skill development and progression toward goals
 2. Meet Every Other Week:
  • Set personal and academic goals for the semester
  • Meet to discuss academic progress reports
  • Discuss challenges & achievements
  • Continue to check progression toward your goals throughout the semester
 3. Meet Monthly:
  • Get to know your success advisor and let me get to know you!
  • Discuss progress reports, alerts, and midterm grades
  • Discuss challenges and work with your success advisor to develop solutions
  • Work with your success advisor to prepare for final exams

ANSWER KEY:

  • If your score is between 20 and 40, run, don’t walk to the Center for Student Success to sign up for your success advisor!
  • If your score is between 41 and 64, getting a success advisor will greatly improve your likelihood of success.
  • If your score is between 65 and 84, you’ve got a good foundation for success, but research has shown that you will benefit from at least three sessions with a success advisor during the first six weeks of classes.
  • If your score is between 85 and 100, You are most likely to use a success advisor or tutor when you need one.
  • If you score a 3 or below on any question , it’s a good idea to get success advising for the skill related to the question.
