University Writing Center

There are many ways to book an appointment with the Writing Center. You can book online by visiting our scheduling system at https://newhaven.navigate.eab.com/
During operating hours, you can also book an appointment in person with a receptionist (go to the lower level of the Martin K. Peterson Library basement). The Writing Center offers appointments in person or online.

Faculty members: if you would like to encourage one of your students to make one or a series of appointments at the Writing Center, you can select “tutoring: prepare writing assignment” as an alert in Navigate.

Who is allowed to go to the Writing Center?

The Writing Center and its services are open to any University of New Haven undergraduate or graduate student.

How often may I visit the Writing Center?

You can visit the Writing Center as often as you’d like, but no more than two appointments in a single day. We also don’t allow students to book back-to-back appointments.

How can an appointment with a tutor help me?

An appointment with a Writing Center tutor can help you get your ideas for a paper organized, clarify your thoughts and ideas, or contact your professor to ask them questions about your assignment.

Who are the tutors?

Writing Center tutors are your fellow students! They all attend classes at the University of New Haven so, don’t be surprised if you see them around campus! They are enrolled in an additional one-credit class where they are trained in tutoring strategies.

What kind of assignments can I come to the Writing Center for help with?

The Writing Center can help you with a wide variety of assignments! We can work with you on essays, summaries, reflections, speeches, presentations, lab reports, technical memos, personal statements, or any other type of writing you can come up with. The possibilities are truly endless!

What do I need to bring with me?

When you book an appointment at the Writing Center, be sure to bring your assignment sheet as well as any work you have already accomplished. If you haven’t started writing yet, just bring your assignment.

What is an appointment like?

Log on to https://newhaven.mywconline, click the yellow box that designates your appointment and click “Join or Start Consolation.” Your tutor will meet you in the online space to hold your appointment. Watch this video for more details about online appointments. You will have a total of 45 minutes to work with your tutor. How the appointment itself proceeds from that point will depend on what you are hoping to accomplish and what you have questions about.

Why do I not get to work with my tutor for a full 60 minutes?

From the start of the hour that your appointment is scheduled for, you only have 45 minutes to work on your assignment. This is because your tutor needs 15 minutes to write up a report about what you talked about and accomplished in your appointment. This report is then sent to you and the Director of the Writing Center. You have the option on the Before We Begin Form to also send this report to you professor.

Why is it a good thing to send my report to my professor?

Sending your report to your professor is encouraged because it lets your professor know that you are trying your best on the assignment and that you are using the academic services available to you to improve your writing. Because you do all of the work yourself (tutors don’t edit your paper or provide content for you to include), you should feel confident that the report will show your Professor that you’re putting extra effort into your work.

Can I bring my paper to the Writing Center to get it edited?

Not exactly. Tutors can read through your paper with you and help you learn how to find and correct common mistakes. We can discuss any questions you have about grammar and help you learn how to fix grammatical mistakes, but we won’t edit the paper for you.

How can I become a peer writing tutor?

Peer tutors are hired each spring to begin work in the Writing Center during the following fall semester. Application information can be found on the right-hand side of this page. We accept applicants in late fall and early spring for tutors to begin working at the Writing Center the following fall.. Contact the Writing Center (writingcenter@newhaven.edu) with any questions.

The mission of the University of New Haven Writing Center (an expansion of the Writer to Writer peer-tutoring program) is to provide high-quality tutoring to undergraduate and graduate students as they write for a wide range of purposes and audiences. Tutors are undergraduate students studying Biology, Communications, Criminal Justice, National Security, Engineering, English, Environmental Science, Forensic Science, Legal Studies, Marine Biology, Music, Nutrition, and Psychology.  We are here to work with you at any stage in the writing process; just bring in your assignment, your ideas, and any writing you’ve done so far.
